Does YouTube Premium Lite Include Background Play?

YouTube Premium Lite includes background play for most videos, but excludes music content and Shorts. Eligible audio can continue when you leave YouTube or lock your iPhone.

What Premium Lite background play covers
YouTube’s current Premium Lite help lists background play and downloads for most videos. Music and Shorts are excluded. Music restrictions can apply to covers, dance videos or vlogs that use music from YouTube’s partners, as well as official releases.

- Confirm YouTube is signed into the account with the active membership.
- Try a regular spoken video to compare with the video that stopped.
- Review YouTube’s background-play setting and your account’s available benefits.
- Update the app, then repeat the same test.
If a tutorial works but a music video stops, revisit content eligibility. If both fail, record the videos and account settings before contacting YouTube support. This helps separate a content limit from an app problem.
