Playback troubleshooting
YouTube No Sound: Fix Audio in Chrome, iPhone and iPad (11/2026)
Fix YouTube videos that play without sound. Check player volume, Chrome sound permissions, iPhone audio output and extension conflicts before resetting settings.

If a YouTube video keeps moving but you hear nothing, check the player volume, browser sound permission and selected speaker or headphones. These are separate controls. Raising the phone or computer volume will not undo every mute setting.
This guide covers desktop Chrome and iPhone/iPad playback. YouTube’s no-sound help recommends checking browser/device volume and sound settings, then restarting the browser or device. Follow the narrower checks below first so you can identify which setting mattered.
Separate silent video from stopped playback
Open the full video page, start playback and watch whether the timeline advances. Try another video with audio you already know, then an audio clip in another app. These comparisons narrow the scope; they do not prove a particular cause.
| What happens | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| One video or one section is silent; other videos have sound | Compare another part of the recording and the same video in another player |
| All YouTube videos are silent in Chrome; another app has sound | YouTube volume, Chrome sound permissions and extensions |
| Other apps are silent too | Device volume and the selected audio output |
| The timeline stops when you lock your iPhone | Background playback, rather than a mute setting |
For that last symptom, use the separate iPhone screen-off playback guide. A frozen or paused player needs a different investigation from a video that is still playing silently.
Check the YouTube player and device volume
On desktop YouTube, click the crossed-out speaker icon to unmute and move the player’s volume slider above zero. On a phone or tablet, start the video and raise the media volume while it plays. Keep the initial level modest when changing outputs.
Check the device’s sound output too. A computer may be sending sound to a monitor or connected headphones instead of the speakers you expect. Select the intended output in the operating system’s sound settings. If another app is also silent on that output, keep troubleshooting the device rather than installing a YouTube extension.
Allow sound for YouTube in desktop Chrome
- Open the affected YouTube page in Chrome.
- Select the site information icon to the left of the address, then Site settings.
- Find Sound and allow playback if it is blocked. Return to the video and reload it.
Google documents this per-site permission route. To inspect the browser’s default instead, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Sound, as described in Chrome’s media controls help. Prefer a YouTube-specific change when only that site is affected; you do not need to reset every permission.
Tube Pro PiP playback options
The Tube Pro PiP Chrome extension is free to use and lists ad blocking, Picture in Picture and an audio equalizer for desktop YouTube. Its captions depend on available tracks, and ad-blocking effectiveness may change as YouTube changes. See the Chrome extension setup and limits before installing. It cannot restore sound blocked by the operating system or repair a recording’s missing audio.
The separate Tube Pro PiP app for iPhone and iPad offers ad blocking → background playback → Picture in Picture for supported content. It is free to use forever, with optional in-app purchases. Playback support varies by video, website and device; caption languages depend on available tracks, and word highlighting requires word timing. The app does not change settings inside official YouTube, and the desktop Chrome extension does not install into the iPhone app.
Select the audio output on iPhone or iPad
While the video is playing, open Control Center and inspect the playback destination in the media controls. Select the device you want to hear, such as the iPhone’s speaker rather than an AirPlay speaker elsewhere. Then adjust the volume while playback continues.
Apple documents the playback destination control on iPhone, including access from Control Center and the Lock Screen. A selected wireless destination is a routing choice; it does not mean the video’s audio is missing. If the output is correct but only one app remains silent, close and reopen that app and compare another video before changing more settings.
Isolate a Chrome extension conflict
If permissions and outputs look correct, temporarily disable playback or audio extensions, including Tube Pro PiP if installed. In Chrome, use More → Extensions → Manage extensions and turn them off. Reload the same video. If sound returns, enable one extension at a time and reload after each change to identify the interaction.
Google explains the extension controls and recommends this isolation method in its media troubleshooting guide. Leave the suspected extension disabled while checking its support or update information; this comparison does not establish that all extensions are faulty. If the browser still has no sound, restart it, then restart the device if needed.
After sound returns
If audio is audible but its balance needs adjusting, continue with the Tube Pro PiP equalizer guide for Chrome. Equalization changes the sound you already have; it is not a replacement for unmuting or selecting an output.
If just one recording stays silent across players while other videos work, avoid repeatedly resetting the device. Note the video URL and affected time range for the creator or YouTube’s feedback flow. If every app stays silent on the intended output after a restart, use your device manufacturer’s audio troubleshooting guidance. No player can guarantee a fix for all of these cases.
Why is YouTube silent when my device volume is up?
The player may still be muted, Chrome may block sound for YouTube, or audio may be going to a different output. Check each control separately; device volume alone does not identify the cause.
Can Tube Pro PiP fix every YouTube no-sound problem?
No. Its playback tools do not repair missing audio in a recording or override operating-system sound restrictions. Include the extension in your temporary disable-and-compare checks if the problem happens in Chrome.
Is audio stopping on screen lock the same problem?
Not necessarily. If the playback timeline also stops, investigate background-playback support and eligibility. This guide addresses video that continues playing without audible sound.
